I've got another two corgi questions. Trekker is an extremely vocal dog. It's often like he's talking to me. He has all sorts of pitches he uses depending on what he's wanting. Trek even talks to Shiloh in play. Is that just his personality or typical corgi? Also, do corgis generally play with one of their own kind with more exuberance than other breeds. Trekker has played with all sorts of dogs but for the past two weeks there has been a pen at class and after the work is done they have off leash play. There is a marked difference in his play habits with another corgi than any other dog. Usual or just Trekker?
I was going to get some new pictures for the blog at our classes this weekend and of course forgot the camera.

Russ is very vocal too. With many pitches for different things--play growls, have to go outside, pay attention to me, and many more.
Corgis are frappers, and they play rough with each other!

We have a social "corgi" club here in Albuquerque. It's for both breeds, but when we get to the meeting place, the Cardis leave the Pems and play among themselves -- they are far wilder than when they play with any other breed.
Since we have both breeds running together in the house, they all play very rough. But, even both breeds of Corgi play very differently. Pems love to play chase and tag, and the Cardis love to wrestle and rough and tumble. They instinctively know that other breeds probably don't play this way, so they "tone it down" a little.
As far as the talking goes, we have both...very vocal and some that hardly ever bark. Ruby, Emmy, and Bear (go figure...he's Russ's full brother LOL)are the barkers and each uses different voices for what they want. We've taught Emmy to use an inside voice and an outside voice. Her inside voice is a series of rooster crows, whereas her outside voice devolves into a croaking frog-like sound. Ruby, well, Ruby is just Ruby. Her bark can generally be classified as incessant, screeching, and will generally pull the paint off the walls, as it also has a quality that echoes. I've documented all about Bear's barking, so I won't go into that. ;o)
Now the non-barkers....Dream and Ransom. Dream will bark on occasion, but usually only when she's trying to be VERY adamant about something. Even then, it's mostly a warble or twitter. Ransom only barks when he's playing, and that's AWESOME in my book for a Pem!!!
Everyone else in our house is classified as middle of the road. They all have their moments of barking or silence.
Very typical corgi! My Cardigans play much differently with each other than with other breeds. I think they play harder than many other breeds. My Vallhund plays similar to the corgis in style, but just like the Cardigans, when Hawk gets around other Vallhunds, it's almost more excitement than he can stand. I think the short herding dogs really recognize each other. :-) Whew, glad to know your Cardigan is "normal!" haa
Sherilyn, can you teach Syd an INSIDE voice? She only has one volume, whether she's inside or out, and whether it's 5pm or 5am!
Except for PJ all my cardis are mouthy, bark, whine, snort, howl and currently the boys are moaning for a stinky girl. My Cardis are very much dog bigots. They love other Cardis, and pems are ok but most other breeds should be barked at or ignored. Occasionally they will find a dog the like but mostly it is just a Cardi thing :-)
We're chiming in as two other vocal Cardis... but each has their own "vocabulary"... that is quite distinct.

Sarah...you mean Jacque didn't breed in the "volume" control on Syd?? hehe Cindy has been complaining about Merlot, too...seems she takes after Mom and has a loud bark. I need to figure out a way to breed that into the next models. If we could patent that, especially on the Corgis, WOW!
With Emmy, I'm not sure how that came about, but we LOVE her rooster crow! When Pat Santi heard her do that at Nationals she laughed and said that came from her Daddy Danny. Now, if we could find a way to get rid of the "croaking", especially at 6:30 AM, it would be nice! Still working on that one. :)
I love it when the Corgis "talk" to us, and we keep trying to get them to learn the "inside" voice thing...reward when they do talk softly, and ignore when they bark loudly. Little by little some of them are getting it.
